Home of such famous San Diegans and landmarks as Star Wars’ own Jedi Master, Mark Hamil (Luke Skywalker), Cameron Crowe’s basis for the hilarious 1980’s teenage coming of age comedy/drama, Fast Time’s at Ridgemont High (Clairemont High School), and even a few reality TV stars, one of whom is the matriarch of one of the most famous families in the world, Kris Jenner. First populated in the late 1880’s, this community started its expanse with a small train depot located on Morena Blvd., and slowly began building up the hill starting at the bottom of Bay Park in 1936. Bay Park Elementary, built in 1939, boasts some stellar ratings on Great Schools, ranking a 9 out of 10. Other great schools in the area are Longfellow K-8 Spanish Immersion and Magnet School (8 out of 10 Great School rating) Holmes Elementary School (10 out of 10 Great School rating), Mt. Everest Academy K-12 (9 out of 10 Great Schools rating), and the infamous Clairemont Highschool which now offers acadamies tailored to your child’s interest, amongst many other schools within the area, most of which are elementary.
With an abundance of restaurants, parks, and even nightlife, Clairemont is no longer a diamond in the rough. It has become one of the most sought after communities for young families in this beautiful city we all call home. Head on over to Cold Stone for an ice cream right before checking out the latest movies at Reading Towne Square Cinemas.
Are you or your children adrenaline junkies? Two of San Diego’s coolest skate parks are in located here for your adrenaline needs. YMCA’s Krause Family Skate and Bike Park on Clairemont Drive offers big ramps for the intermediate/advanced skater or BMX bandit, smaller ramps for the beginner scooter or inline skater, and a mini street park and pool. Does your daughter throw a wicked fast ball? Sign her up for girls fast pitch at the East Clairemont Athletic Field, formerly known as the Bobby Sox Field.
Feel like having a date night teenage style? Grab some delicious sushi at Niban located off the 805 freeway and Clairemont Mesa Blvd., and then walk over to Boomers and race your sweetheart on some go carts before mini golf. Craving Italian and romance, make a reservation and wet your pallet at Baci Ristorante on Morena Blvd.
Are you a fitness junkie? Try out Rawana Fitness and get hydrostatic body fat testing and a specialized fitness program that is guaranteed to help you shred those unwanted pounds. Owned and operated by Clairemont locals Siaosi and Ida Veimau, it is definitely ‘not your average jungle gym.’ You can take a hike in the local trails of the expansive Tecelote Canyon, or set up a tee time for a round of golf at the Tecelote Golf Course, which also hosts one of only two Foot Golf courses in San Diego. It’s great fun for the whole family. And don’t forget about Mission Bay Park right down the street. Regardless of your preferences, Clairemont has something for everybody.
